Some beautiful surprises seeing friends who had heard of the hmmm through facebook or word of mouth. And thanks to the many who suggested that we make this a monthly event.
Its so true that we should.
This situation comes up at every important juncture of the works I’ve been referring to as HMMM. I’m torn by thinking about making a living as an artist every day, and the repercussions of commiting myself to another volunteer event in my life. But then again it would be a bit perverse to being paid for this kind of thing. It is so very clearly about non-commercialism.
What is the HMMM about I wonder… everyone who participates in it must have their own singular view.
The rotunda of Victoria Square was an extraordinary experience. Between 20 & 30 of us walked to it, leaving the metro officially, to get to a fairly small, dimly lit, intimate space that many Montreal pedestrians must travel daily. We gradually expanded the humming into open vowels mostly, which allowed people to really sound out. At some point I know I, among many, was singing to the top of my lungs while travellers popped in through a theatrical array of glass doors from various building complexes. It seemed to last forever, but the video documentation will tell all. Another highpoint was the spontaneous line-up of singers along the rotunda walls, which loo

hey kathy,
Comment by marnie June 12, 2008 @ 4:07 pmthanks for calling another metro hmmmn. it was good to be with the group doing that work again. i found it very challenging to have the cameras be such an imposing part of our experience. This time, much more than the last time, people saw all the media often before they even heard the hum, so the experience was not what it could be.I remember moments in the last hmm we did, when i wasn’t near the camera when i could observe changes in people as they ‘heard’ but before they were conscious of it, and that was precious. There were many moments in that winter experience that touched on the spiritual, which is, of course, what i focus on in life. Hopefully you have enough documentation now, and might be interested in doing one with no cameras or distractions other than to focus on the experience. I would LOVE to be part of that one, fully in the experience in peace and intention.
Hey Marnie,
Comment by kathykennedy June 12, 2008 @ 4:12 pmI see your point completely and agree. We really don’t need any more media after this one, and I too am interested in doing the next hums with voices only!
