Imitation/Tag

Wasn’t this game fun? The facial expressions are quite the additive bonus to the hilarious sounds. Here’s how we define the Imitation/Tag game. Can you think of other fun suggestions? One person begins with a continuous or repetitive sound. Whoever he/she looks at directly has to copy that sound perfectly before the first person stops. The second person then changes the initial sound into a new one and looks at another person to imitate it. This can also work with 2 people making separate sounds and being imitated for a thicker texture to listen to.

Auditory Spatial Awareness

From the Barry Blesser book about acoustic architecture:
in a section called

    Social Spheres and Acoustic Arenas

Ownership rules of an arena are created informally when two or more individuals congregate for a social interchange. Territorial bubbles appear as if by magic around a group of individuals if they begin to interact, and the group quickly acquires rights to the arena. When encountering such a social bubble with its implied acoustic arena, outsiders are reluctant to intervene or to create sonic events (Lindskold et al., 1976). The strength of ownership rights to an acoustic arena depends on the distance between individuals, their perceived status, and the nature of their interactions. Cultures assign implicit rights to acoustic arenas, and there are complex unwritten rules governing the size of an arena being claimed.

Doesn’t this just speak tomes of what the HMMM on St. Laurent could be??? It reminds me that it is important for all the stimulators to remain a good distance from each other.

We hummed outside in the park on St. Laurent and Marieanne. Just outside the zen centre that is in Leonard Cohen’s building. 7 of us standing in a circle. Just as I opened my eyes, a monk was standing in the doorway looking out at us and smiling.mmmmm

June 16 HMMM in a nutshell

Imagine St. Laurent st. as a giant river of sound!

What is HMMM?
HMMM is a spectacular audio event that takes place on sat. June 16, from 3:30-4pm on St. Laurent st. from Sherbrooke to St. Joseph. It is intended to unite Montrealers through vocal expression and to beautify this already magical street. We definitely do not intend to create a disturbance, but rather to heighten all citizens’ awareness of their sonic environment. Because of the soothing effect of HMMM, you will be able to hear your surroundings even better than before. It is an opportunity to avoid words for a short while, and to swim in a sea of vocal sound with your friends and neighbours, through humming.

How can you be a part of it?
On sat. June 16, from 3:30-4pm, CKUT (Radio McGill) 90.3 FM will be broadcasting the humming soundtrack. There are over 50 volunteers that will be carrying radios with the sound, and subtly asking citizens to hum along. You can help spread the HMMM by tuning any available radios to the same station. And of course you will want to hum along! Any note is fine, any melody is ok; as long as you raise your voice.

Where does HMMM come from?
This idea comes from the discipline of acoustic ecology, the study of our sonic environment. For more information about this important research, go to the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology at:

Kathy Kennedy is a Montreal-based sound artist who teaches sound art at Concordia University, and has also been a vocal instructor for over 20 years. She is artistic director of the innovative women’s choir Choeur Maha. Her large-scale choral pieces have been performed on the esplanade of Place des Arts in 1993 as part of le Festival International de la Voix, and for the inauguration of the Vancouver New Public Library in 1995.

HMMM has been performed in Vancouver, Toronto, Kingston, Kitchener and in Lima, Peru.
